Irreconcilable Differences
Bleach, fabric dye and embroidery on cotton, 18 x 24”, 2025
This piece is an extension of thought from Untitled (Self-Portrait), where I realized that the tension between my depressed and core self have perspectives and desires that are irreconcilable. I imagined these two parties going through a negotiation process, a divorce court, and realized that they are incapable of a meeting of the minds. To acknowledge that this conflict is permanent, I decided to alter the fabric itself through my use of bleach and dye. To honour its textile nature, I added embroidery to create focus on a contact point between the two bodies. I also reimagining the wooden stretcher as both a functional tool, an embroidery hoop; as well as a signifier that the work is meant to be read as a painting.
